Blueberry Syrup
What Is Blueberry Syrup?
Blueberry syrup is a fruit-infused simple syrup made by simmering fresh blueberries with sugar and water until the berries release their juices. A small amount of lemon juice is added at the end to brighten the flavor and balance the sweetness.
The finished syrup is smooth, sweet, and packed with real blueberry flavor. Unlike many store-bought syrups that rely on artificial flavors or colors, this homemade version lets the fresh blueberries do all the work.
What Can You Use Blueberry Syrup For?
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how versatile it is. I originally made this syrup for my Blueberry Espresso Martini, but it quickly became one of those ingredients I started adding to everything. It makes an incredible blueberry cold foam for iced coffee, adds fresh fruit flavor to lemonades, sparkling water, iced tea, cocktails, mocktails, and even Italian sodas. It also works beautifully drizzled over pancakes, waffles, French toast, vanilla ice cream, cheesecake, yogurt parfaits, oatmeal, and fresh fruit. Once you have a bottle in the refrigerator, you’ll be surprised by how often you reach for it.
Ingredients & How It’s Made
This recipe uses only four simple ingredients: fresh blueberries, white sugar, water, and a little lemon juice.
The blueberries are simmered with the sugar and water until they’ve released their natural juices into the syrup. Before removing the saucepan from the heat, I like to lightly mash the blueberries to extract as much flavor as possible.
After trying a few different methods, I found that using a potato masher works much better than a fork. It lets you gently press the blueberries without having to reach down into a hot saucepan, making the process easier, safer, and much more effective at releasing the juices.
Once the lemon juice is added, the syrup steeps for another 10–15 minutes before being double strained to remove the seeds and pulp, leaving behind a smooth, vibrant blueberry syrup.
Storage Tips
I personally like storing homemade syrups in 12 oz swing top bottles. They seal tightly, pour easily, and keep the syrup fresh while also looking great in the refrigerator.
Before sealing the bottle, let the syrup cool completely and allow any steam to escape. Closing the bottle while it’s still hot can create condensation inside the container.
When stored in the refrigerator, this blueberry syrup will keep for approximately 3 weeks to 1 month. Since natural separation may occur over time, simply give the bottle a quick shake before each use.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe
If you’re looking for a homemade syrup that’s simple to make and incredibly versatile, this is it. It uses just four everyday ingredients, comes together with very little hands-on work, and delivers fresh blueberry flavor that tastes much better than store-bought syrup. Whether you’re mixing cocktails, making homemade coffee drinks, preparing blueberry cold foam, or adding something extra to your favorite desserts, this recipe is an easy way to make almost anything taste a little more like summer. Plus, it stores well in the refrigerator, making it perfect for meal prep or entertaining throughout blueberry season.
